History and traditions

Ponte de Lima, between history and legend

D. Teresa granted the town its charter in 1125, in a document already mentioning its fair. The bridge and historic centre tell of centuries of encounters beside the Lima. The Lethes legend says Roman soldiers feared losing their memory when crossing the river; their commander showed them they could cross without forgetting who they were.

History and traditions

A path of encounters

For centuries, the routes to Santiago have linked communities, welcomed pilgrims and crossed borders. In Labruja, the Central Portuguese Camino climbs through the hills on one of its most demanding stretches. Chapels, wayside crosses and the Cruz dos Franceses preserve the memory of this passage.

Memories of Pé do Negro

Between Labruja and Bárrio, the River Mestre shaped this corner of rocks, small waterfalls and greenery. Nearby are the Cima and Baixo hillforts, traces of ancient settlement documented by the Ecomuseum. Today, Pé do Negro invites a pause beside the water.

Labruja and its legends

Labruja’s memory is linked to the former monastery of São Cristóvão, rural life and passing pilgrims. In the hills, local tradition connects the Cruz dos Franceses with events during the Napoleonic invasion of 1809. Passed down through generations, these stories belong to the local imagination; the Ecomuseum explores the village’s beliefs, customs and tales.
